The treatment method for erectile dysfunction should be tailored to the cause of the problem. A man reporting to a doctor with an erection problem should undergo a detailed diagnostic procedure (interview taking into account previous sexual activity and psychosocial status, physical examination and additional tests, e.g. determination of morning testosterone, glucose or HbA1c levels .

Symptomatic treatment is supported by pharmaceuticals, which are taken in the form of tablets. They are phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5i) inhibitors, which break down a compound that stimulates relaxation of the muscles of the penile vessels and corpus cavernosum.

Out of all 7 PDE5 registered in the world, four of them are available in Poland: sildenafil , vardenafil, tadalafil , avanafil, which differ mainly in terms of pharmacokinetics, and thus the method of dosing the drug.
